With two weeks off from training my body is feeling refreshed. It’s time to get back into training mode. Nothing helps more to kick things off and get out to train than new equipment, and nothing more so than a new bike. You want to create the eagerness to log miles, get yourself a new bike. It’s like magic!
For me, I recently had the opportunity to splurge on a new bike. Not just any bike though, my longtime dream bike. Seriously, since I raced the Tour of the Rockies back in high school in Steamboat Springs, Colorado I wanted a Moots. Back then I wanted their mountain bike of course. Over the years I became to simply drool over any Moots bike and especially their top-end road offering: the VaMoots SL.
The SL was removed from their production line a few years back due to the expense of the Reynolds 6/4 Seamless Ti tubesets. I guess Reynolds wasn’t selling much of it due to it’s high manufacturing costs and they bagged it. So then went the VaMoots SL. What’s so special about the SL tubeset? Well 6/4 titanium is lighter and more dense than the more common 3/2.5 titanium. This makes for a lighter weight bike while keeping the strength and stiffness high. We are talking a 2.5 lbs ti frame with the drivetrain stiffness of a 3.0 lbs ti frame. And those of you who know me, know I love titanium! I find it blows carbon frames away in terms of ride quality, craftsmanship and beauty. If you want the lightest, stiffest ride possible, then yes go for carbon. If you want a silky smooth ride with a solid road feel and a bike that you will have for the rest of your life, then go ti. Yes, it’s that good and 6/4 seamless ti is the cream of the crop.
So here it is, my dream road bike. Here for me just in time to log my 2010 base miles in pure pleasure. So how did I get the 6/4 tubes if they aren;t made anymore? It just so happened that Moots discovered a small cache of the tubes in their warehouse over the summer when taking inventory. Just enough in fact to produce about 3 frames. When I heard the news through the grapevine I jumped on it and was able to get an unheard of deal through the help of some sponsor connections. Bam! Six weeks later, I have one of the last 6/4 Moots road frames on my doorstep. It was a joyous day.
I built the bike up with the new 7900 Dura-Ace components and carbon/alloy clincher wheels, the new Rotor EVO road crank, Syntace bar/stem, Schwalbe tires, Selle Italia saddle, Crank Bros 4ti Quattro pedals and King Titanium cages. All said and done, I have 15.5 pounds of pure riding beauty. I look forward to the time we will be sharing over the coming months not to mention the rest of our lives.
