With September approaching fast it is time to gear up for the XTERRA USA Championship! The Ogden venue is a favorite among most XTERRA athletes as the mountain scenery is breath taking, the leaves are changing to bright red and yellow colors, and the air is crisp and cool. With a season of training and racing under your belt now, it’s time to dial your training in specifically for what the Utah course demands…HILLS!
The course at Snowbasin does have a lot of climbing, but it comes in reasonable doses and grades. The swim is a standard two-lap swim (without an exit and run between laps). The water is perfect for swimming usually in the upper 60′s. Don’t over exert yourself in the water as to save your energy for the big bike ride that follows. Once on the bike you get a few miles of flat terrain to find your legs before the climbing begins. The first climb is about 15 minutes long up a rocky canyon two-track. Then you pop out on the mountain base and enter singletrack that climbs fairly gradually, where you can maintain some good momentum.
Group workouts are back! Gearing up for the end of the season events, we have plenty of training opportunities available including hard bike and run days and open water swimming after work during the week and longer endurance based riding and running sessions on the weekends. Check the EPC Training Calendar for specifics and come join us!

New off-road triathlon on the scene this year for Front Range multisport athletes: Bear It All Off-Road Triathlon at Bear Creek Park in Lakewood. The date is Sunday October 9th. This is great end-of-season race to try a tri for your first time or prep for late October Championship events. The race offers a “sport” distance and a “full” distance race. The former a half-mile swim in Soda Lake, a 10 mile mountain bike around the park trails, and finishing with a 2.5 mile trail run. The “full” distance race is the same course but with two laps of each event doubling the distance to a full mile swim, 20 mile MTB and 5 mile run. Being very familiar with the trails at Bear Creek Park (I use them for a lot of bike and run training throughout the year) I can say the trails are super fun with a lot of fast, smooth singletrack and a few small hills. Great course and great venue promise to make this a great first-year event. With any luck it will get a great turnout and maybe progress towards gaining official XTERRA status in the years to come. Come on out and support this event!
Bear It All Events, the race promoter, has extended a special discount on race entry to EPC racers and friends. 10% off race entry to the first 20 athletes that use the coupon code: EPC Multisport
Also join us the weekend before the event on Sunday the 2nd for the official preview bike and run of the course led by EPC team racers. You can see what to expect on race day and get some valuable racing tips and advice from experienced racers. Also there will be a bunch of free product give-aways for those that attend!
The official XTERRA Lory course previewing is this Sunday. Cody Waite will be leading the ride and run for all those interested in experiencing the course before race day. The ride begins promptly at 9 AM so get there early enough to get set up and ready before then. We’ll ride a lap or two of the course and then hit the run. We expect a lot of different abilities on hand and riding and running at all paces with at least two group leaders. Afterwards we’ll have some Q&A and some product give aways. “I have some nice schwag from First Endurance and Runners Roost Lakewood for those folks that show up” says Cody. Don’t miss it!
My new website/blog has been up for a couple months now. Now I just need to keep it updated. I plan to add weekly posts on my training, traveling, racing, and other random thoughts. Check it out and feel free to reply. Thanks!
For 2011 the XTERRA World Championship course in Maui has moved locations. Still on the island of Maui, the race has been moved north, up to Kapalua. The change in course will make the Championship race totally new experience for everyone involved. Rumors have it that the north shore contains more surf (ie. bigger waves), a more temperate climate (as opposed to the hot desert climate of the south, jungle type vegetation, and still plenty of climbing. I’ve visited the northwest area of Maui during a few of my trips there and can attest to the dramatic change in environment. Here is a video that has just been released on the XTERRA website to give you a good idea what the new course is all about…
