Last Saturdays sprint tri went well. Despite a fairly strong field (including Michael Lovato and others), riding my stock road bike (all other top finishers were on their decked out aero bikes) and having done a tough combo session only 60-hours earlier (that included a 10k trail run race) I felt surprisingly good and pulled off a 6th place overall and topped my 30-34 age group. Teammate and sprint-tri ace, Luke Jay, nipped me by 5 seconds in another wave after the times were added up. I love it when coachee’s beat me. That’s when I get to start asking them for advice!

Anyway, after a relatively long run/bike warm-up, I decided to tackle the swim with basically no warm-up in the water. Reason being this will most likely be the case in Tahoe. With the water temp typically around 55 degrees in Tahoe spending any significant time in the water prior to the start of the race can be counter productive from a “warm-up” standpoint. If I can get thoroughly warmed-up on land and then do some dry-land swim warm-ups and then a brief dunk just before the start, I figure I should be good to go. This technique seemed to work well last weekend, so I am going to stick with it for Tahoe.
Surprisingly, I came out of the water in 5th place, right on the heels of female pro Amanda Lovato. I hurried through transition, fumbling a bit with my non-tri road shoes with buckles and managed to beat Mrs. Lovato out of T1. Onto the bike I felt great. Good power and a solid 24.2 mph despite having a single piece of aero equipment. It felt great leaving the others behind and holding strong against the leaders pedaling away on my road bike. I noticed some surprised looks by racers and spectators alike when I rolled into T2.
Again fumbling with my road shoe buckles, I hurried out of T2 still in 4th place. I got into a good rhythm early and held onto a 5:55 pace for the 5k run over a hilly course. I felt very solid and think I was closing on the 3rd place pro ahead, coming across the line in 4th place in 1:01:40. Perfect training for Tahoe in two weeks.
Later that evening I went for a 2 hour spin on the bike to help with the recovery process. Sunday I got some more time in on the bike and Monday was a recovery day. Today is my next Peak Workout: another 2xSub-26 minute LT climbs on the mountain bike followed by a shorter trail running race. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Feeling stronger this week. Last weekend I got in a nice track workout with Julie and Ed followed by a 4 hour ride in the mountains. The track workout was intended to help bring some leg speed into the Tahoe equation. Leading up to Ogden I had gotten in about 4 good weeks of track workouts and surprisingly I was able to make the same pace last weekend which confirms that my speed is coming back. Sunday I got in some time on the bike followed by a swift transition run that again surprised me how good I am beginning to feel.

The early part of this week was pretty low key with some swims, weight training sessions and light bike rides. Wednesday was another big day on the bike and run. I did a tough mountain bike ride up Mt Falcon twice then down via Lair of the Bear. I managed to pull off two back to back sub-26 minute efforts up Falcon’s, 3-ish mile, 1700 ft climb, just like the Tunnel Creek Climb in Tahoe ;-)    Total ride time was 2.5 hours. I timed it just right to finish about 30 minutes before the start of a local Wednesday night trail run race at Bear Creek Park. This week was a 6.5 mile hammer-fest that I held on for 5th place in 42-ish minutes. This workout has been proving to be a good one the last three weeks as I’ve managed to go a little bit faster on the bike climbs each week and maintain similar paces on the trail runs despite the runs getting about a mile longer each week. These sessions have been leaving me pretty shelled on the last several Thursdays and Fridays, but I think they will pay off big in a couple weeks.
Today was a light swim, recovery ride and a massage. Next up on the schedule is a local Sprint Tri out at Cherry Creek Reservoir on Saturday followed by more time on the bike post race and another long bike/run day on Sunday. In the mean time I’ll rest up with some more swimming sessions and active recovery workouts. Off to bed!

Three and a half weeks, that how long till the Xterra National Championships. A lot has happened over the last few weeks since my as-of-now  best race of this year in Ogden. The week after Ogden I was all fired up to go full bore into Nationals training and I got sick. For a whole week I was down for the count. Fever, nausea, aches, pains, intestinal distress, you name it, I had it that week. The following week I was able to resume some form of training, but I felt weak and on the edge of illness all week. I spent a lot of time on the bike logging big hours, but basically no time running or swimming because I just didn’t feel up to either.

Last week I finally began to come around to feeling better. I was able to get back in the pool for a few light swims, get in some good runs and a few longer bike rides. My swimming has definitely lost ground, but I’m confident I can get back to my norm with three more weeks in the pool. My biking legs still feel kinda off. Just a little weak feeling. My running has surprisingly been feeling pretty good. I am keeping positive heading towards Nationals that this “break from training” will help re-motivate me for the final push of the season.
It’s too early in my return to health and training for me to make any predictions on my results at Nationals and Worlds. I’ll keep you posted on my training progression and venture a prediction as the time nears, so stay tuned.
